Dome Tops Casino Advisory Panel List
The Millennium Dome in London wins round one in the bid for Britain's super casino.
The Casino Advisory Panel announced the result of its first assessment where they ranked the eight short listed candidate locations for the super casino. Glasgow came in a close second to the Dome, while Blackpool came in at third.
The announcement came out July 24, hot on the heels of the ongoing controversy between the Dome's owner Philip Anschutz and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.
Prescott came under fire this year after the revelation that he spent a few days in the Colorado estate of Anschutz in July of 2005. Prescott was pelted with accusations of conflict of interest.
Prescott has been accused of compromising the casino bidding process with his association with Anschutz. Many are expecting that the favorable ranking of the Millennium Dome might be thought of to be the working of Prescott.
The panel however was quick to dismiss this notion, saying that it is purely incidental. It says that the results of the first round would not affect succeeding assessments.
The Millennium Dome, Glasgow and Blackpool are joined by Sheffield, Brent, Newcastle, Cardiff and Manchester. The final decision of the panel will be presented to the government in December.
